# Preview Key

A **preview key** is an API key that can read **staging** content as well as published content. Preview deployments use it with the `preview` API type, so editors can see their saved changes in the site's design before they publish.

Keep the preview key on the server and never expose it publicly. It is separate from the instance's **Security Key**, which your site uses to validate a preview request before it switches into preview mode. Manage keys in **Settings > API Keys**.
