# Locale

A **locale** is a language or region, such as `en-us` or `fr-ca`, in which you serve a different version of your content. Locales live inside an instance and are added in **Settings > Locales**. Adding one is close to permanent: you can disable a locale yourself, but deleting one needs Agility support.

When you copy an item into another locale, the copies share the same `contentID`, each has its own field values, and each locale publishes on its own schedule. Use locales for languages and regions of the same site, not to represent different sites.
