# Custom Field

A **custom field** renders a custom interface for a field that editors fill in, such as a color picker, a Markdown editor, or a search of an external system. Custom fields are provided by Apps and added to content models and component models like any other field.

What the API returns for a custom field depends on what the custom field saves, so check its documentation or inspect an item before you rely on the shape.
