# Asset

An **asset** is a static file, such as an image, PDF, audio or video file, uploaded to your instance's asset manager. Assets are served over a global CDN, from the server closest to each visitor, and are accessed by URL.

You organize assets in folders and sub-folders, or group them in galleries. Content and components reference assets through image, file and gallery fields, and the Management API can upload them for you.

**Also called:** media (for example, Upload Media in the Management API).
